Fact check: No, Iran did not strike a secret US Gulf base

Deutsche Welle fact-checked a viral video circulating on social media that claimed to show an Iranian retaliatory strike on a secret U.S. military base in the Gulf. The video, which had been shared widely on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, was shown to be entirely fabricated. It actually depicted a fire at the Pravoberezhny Market in St. Petersburg, Russia, which occurred in December. The same footage had previously been used to falsely claim involvement in other conflicts, including an alleged Iranian attack on Dubai, a U.S. attack on Kuwait, and a Hezbollah strike on Israel. Reverse image searches confirmed the video’s origin and demonstrated its repeated misuse across multiple languages and platforms.

Bias read (Center): The article presents a clear fact-check of a misleading video without taking sides. It provides evidence from multiple sources and locations to confirm the video's inaccuracy, maintaining neutrality throughout.

Why these scores (Factual 95 · Objective 90): Factuality is high as the article clearly identifies the video as false and provides evidence through reverse image searches and comparisons with previous misinformation. Objectivity is slightly lower due to some emotionally charged language around the spread of misinformation, but remains largely n
