Explosion due to alleged gas accumulation leaves two elderly deceased in Providence

An explosion caused by a suspected gas accumulation resulted in the deaths of two elderly individuals in the commune of Providencia on Monday night. The incident occurred during a fire that originated from what authorities believe was a buildup of gas, leading to an explosion that completely destroyed the home where the victims lived. The fire then spread to a nearby commercial establishment and affected a second house, prompting the deployment of more than ten companies from the Santiago Fire Department.

The emergency took place near the intersection of Bellavista and Punta Arenas streets, where nearly a hundred volunteers worked to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading further into neighboring homes. According to Sergio Yévenes, the third commander of the Santiago Fire Department, the fire was triggered by a gas accumulation that led to an explosion affecting a residential property entirely. The fire also reached a neighboring commercial building and another house located behind it. He confirmed that two individuals were found dead inside the house where the explosion occurred.

Residents in the area reported hearing a loud explosion that alerted neighbors, who attempted to assist the occupants of the building. However, the intensity of the fire prevented them from entering the premises. Minutes later, a second explosion reportedly occurred, possibly linked to another gas cylinder, which worsened the situation.

Jaime Bellolio, the mayor of Providencia, expressed his condolences over the loss of life and noted that the explosion resulted in the death of two residents of the commune. He emphasized that he would refrain from providing additional information until the families of the deceased arrived. Bellolio highlighted the quick response of both local residents and emergency teams. He explained that after the initial explosion, a second one occurred due to another gas cylinder, prompting the arrival of emergency services to manage the fire and assist the community. Approximately twenty people had to be evacuated during the incident, and the mayor thanked the firefighters for their efforts. He mentioned that the municipality has already initiated support measures for those affected by the disaster, including social assistance for damaged properties and psychological care as needed. Additionally, the city plans to provide help with debris removal in the coming days.

Regarding the affected commercial property, the mayor indicated that it suffered significant structural damage. He noted that machinery might be required to clean up the site but stated they were awaiting instructions from the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The exact causes of the fire and explosion will be determined through investigative procedures conducted by the Public Ministry. Specialized teams continued working at the scene once the emergency was under control. The incident underscores the potential dangers associated with gas accumulation and highlights the importance of safety protocols and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies.
