Ex-Syrian intelligence chief found guilty of torture and sexual abuse by Austrian court

A former Syrian intelligence officer, identified as Khaled al-H., and a former police chief in Raqqa, Moussab Abou R., have been convicted by an Austrian court of torture, sexual abuse, and other severe mistreatment of anti-government protesters during the early stages of the Syrian civil war. Both men were found guilty of ordering or failing to prevent the abuse of political opponents in Raqqa between 2011 and 2013. They were sentenced to eight years in prison but have the right to appeal. Prosecutors argued that the abuses were intended to suppress dissent and instill fear among the population. Some victims traveled from across Europe and Syria to testify, describing physical and psychological trauma inflicted during their detention. The two men sought asylum in Austria in 2015, and Khaled al-H. was reportedly transferred there by Austria’s former domestic intelligence service, BVT, at the request of Israel’s Mossad. Former BVT head Martin Weiss, involved in the transfer, is currently wanted in connection with another fugitive spy.

Gaza doctor held by Israel since 2024 told lawyer 'this is the last time you'll see me'

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a prominent pediatrician and director of the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained without charge or trial by Israeli authorities since December 27, 2024. According to Amnesty International, he recently told his lawyer that this might be the last time they would meet, indicating a grave risk to his life due to alleged torture and mistreatment in custody. His lawyer reported visible signs of abuse, including bruises and torture marks, and noted that Dr. Abu Safiya appeared severely weakened and close to losing consciousness. He was transferred to the Rakevet underground detention facility, where he reportedly faces daily beatings, threats, and other abuses. Amnesty International has condemned these actions, emphasizing the inhumanity of detaining a healthcare worker who has dedicated his life to aiding others in Gaza. His family has expressed deep concern over his worsening health and called for urgent international action to stop the torture and ensure his medical care.

Bias read (Progressive): The article highlights the detention of a Palestinian medic by Israeli authorities, focusing on allegations of torture and lack of charges. It emphasizes the humanitarian crisis and calls for international intervention, aligning with a left-leaning perspective that criticizes state actions and human
