Ex-official among 33,019 who failed to complete eTAX filings amid unclear wording

The Office of the Ombudsman in Hong Kong reported that over 33,000 taxpayers failed to complete their eTAX filings due to unclear instructions in the system. The ambiguity led many to mistakenly believe that signing through the 'iAM Smart' platform finalized their submissions, when they actually needed to wait for a confirmation page. Between May 2, 2023, and January 31, 2024, 489,425 taxpayers attempted electronic submissions, with 14,000 successfully resubmitting on the same day as their initial attempt. Nearly 5,200 received penalty notices, and two individuals were prosecuted. Dr. Luk Che-chung, a former hospital authority official, highlighted the issue and called for government improvements.
