Even small amounts of ocean plastic can affect petrel chicks

Over 71% of sampled chicks contained plastic in their digestive systems, indicating that even small amounts of ingested plastic can lead to measurable physiological changes. These changes were observed in key areas such as nutrition, body condition, metabolism, liver and muscle function, and immune response. Researchers noted that while the quantity of plastic consumed was relatively small compared to the chicks' body mass, it was sufficient to trigger biological signals. The findings highlight the potential risks of ocean plastic pollution to seabird populations and underscore the need for further research into its ecological impacts.
