Europe's biggest comedy festival held in UK cancelled as firm goes into liquidation

The Leicester Comedy Festival, Europe's largest and longest-running comedy event, has been cancelled after the organisation behind it, The Big Difference Company, went into liquidation. The decision came as the company declared itself insolvent, ending three decades of hosting the annual festival in Leicester, England. The festival, which began in 1994, had grown to feature over 700 shows across more than 60 venues each year. It offered a diverse range of comedic performances, including stand-up, comedy films, poetry, spoken word, comic theatre, and art exhibitions. Leicester's City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, expressed his condolences for the company's financial collapse and confirmed that the city council would ensure a comedy festival continues in the city next year. The 2027 edition was originally scheduled to run from February 3 to 21. Soulsby noted that while the council could not assume the company's debts, it intended to work with local promoters and venues to organise an interim festival, paving the way for a long-term solution. It is estimated that over £100,000 in unpaid fees remains outstanding, affecting numerous comedians, promoters, and venues. This situation has drawn criticism from Equity, the performers' union, which called the circumstances "grossly unfair." Despite this, Equity has managed to secure payments for some of the unpaid comedians, according to a spokesperson named Michael Day. He stressed that the success of the festival relies heavily on the efforts of these performers and that their lack of payment is unjust. In response to the cancellation, former staff members of the Leicester Comedy Festival released a statement expressing their shock and frustration. They claimed they were left uninformed and unpaid during the final months leading up to the insolvency announcement.
