European media targeted by Iranian propaganda

An investigation led by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), has uncovered coordinated propaganda efforts on Instagram targeting European audiences, particularly around narratives related to Iran. The study analyzed over 12.8 million comments under posts from nine public broadcasters across Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Lithuania, and Austria, revealing organized campaigns promoting pro-Iran messages. These included synchronized comments from multiple accounts within seconds, such as a group of 57 accounts posting identical content under a Tagesschau post and another 27 accounts repeating the same message under a ZDFheute post shortly after. Experts suggest this aligns with Iranian state propaganda strategies aimed at portraying Iran as a victim of Western aggression. While some accounts appear authentic and have been active for years, others are suspected to be bots. The report highlights the growing influence of coordinated online activism in shaping public discourse.

Bias read (Progressive): The article frames the issue as a coordinated effort by 'bots and activists' to spread pro-Iran narratives, which aligns with a left-leaning perspective that often critiques Western foreign policy and supports Middle Eastern states. The emphasis on Iran's portrayal as a victim of Western aggression,
