Putin's superyacht flees to the Arctic from sanctions

A luxury yacht linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin has been spotted heading north toward the Arctic, likely to avoid Western sanctions. The 82-meter-long yacht 'Graceful' is currently sailing along Norway's coast toward the Russian port of Murmansk, accompanied by two Russian navy ships. NATO is monitoring the convoy. The yacht, valued at over €110 million, features high-end amenities such as a helicopter deck, a private pool that can convert into a ballroom, and advanced security systems. Western intelligence agencies and independent researchers have been tracking the yacht since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It was previously observed leaving German shipyards in haste and retreating to safe Russian territorial waters in Kaliningrad. Investigators from the closed opposition leader Alexei Navalny's team revealed that the official owners of the yacht use complex networks of shell companies in tax havens to conceal the fact that most of the funds for maintaining the yacht come from the Russian state budget or state-owned enterprises. Due to international pressure and the risk of seizure upon entering international waters, the yacht is expected to remain docked

EU places six Russians on sanctions list for involvement in Navalny's death

The European Union has added six Russians to its sanctions list due to their involvement in the development of chemical weapons, specifically epibatidine, which was used to poison Alexei Navalny in 2024 while he was imprisoned in a Russian penal colony. This conclusion was reached by an investigation conducted jointly by the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Sweden earlier this year. Epibatidine is typically found in frogs in South America but is not normally present in Russia. The toxin causes muscle paralysis, leading to death by suffocation. The six individuals sanctioned by the EU are scientists and researchers associated with the military sector who studied the toxin and published articles on it, thereby contributing to its development as a chemical weapon. Their financial assets within the EU are frozen, and they are prohibited from entering the EU. They are among 31 individuals and six organizations or companies already sanctioned for developing chemical weapons.
