Víctor Mallarino, a renowned Colombian actor, director, and producer, recently spoke publicly for the first time about his battle with cancer and the profound influence of his brother’s illness on his life. Rafael Mallarino had been a promising football player in the youth ranks of Independiente Santa Fe before sustaining a severe car accident that ended his athletic career. Later, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological condition that eventually led to his death after nearly five years of decline. The emotional toll of watching his brother endure this illness was immense for Mallarino, who admitted to experiencing panic attacks and feeling lost for days following the diagnosis. Despite the pain of witnessing his brother's slow deterioration, Mallarino found strength in Rafael’s unwavering composure. He described his brother as made of "a material like platinum, very fine and very resistant." This admiration became a guiding force in how Mallarino approached his own health crisis. He credited his brother’s resilience for helping him maintain equanimity during his cancer journey, which he believes would have taken a different course had he not had Rafael as a role model. Born into one of Colombia’s most prominent artistic families, he faced early hardships when his father passed away when he was just 10 years old. This loss forced him to take on financial responsibilities at a young age, working odd jobs to support his family. Before becoming a respected figure in television and theater, he held various roles due to economic constraints, including selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door and drawing for a board game factory, where he also counted educational bills included in Monopoly boxes. These formative experiences, combined with the loss of three key figures in his immediate family circle, shaped Mallarino’s outlook on life.
