ESCAPADE's cameras capture Earth and moon

NASA's ESCAPADE mission, launched in November 2025 from Cape Canaveral, carried two camera systems developed by researchers at Northern Arizona University (NAU) with support from the University of California, Berkeley, and Rocket Lab. Eight months later, the twin spacecraft captured unique images of Earth and the Moon using visible and thermal-infrared light. The images, taken from a distance of approximately 363,250 miles (584,500 km) from Earth and 115,600 miles (186,000 km) from the Moon, revealed Earth as a crescent with 8% sunlight and the Moon appearing larger due to its proximity. Thermal-infrared data showed Earth's night side glowing from internal heat, while the Moon's night side remained extremely cold. These images serve as a calibration check for the cameras before the spacecraft proceed to a Lagrange point 2 orbit, then use Earth's gravity to slingshot toward Mars in 2026. Upon arrival in 2027, the cameras aim to study interactions between solar wind and Mars' atmosphere.
