Epic, 1700-kilometre hiking trail opens in Greece

Known as the Peloponnese Mythic Trail Network, this extensive network connects 12 major walking routes, providing hikers with access to coastal vistas, historic towns, and archaeological sites that reflect the rich heritage of the area. The launch coincides with the European summer hiking season, positioning Greece as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking both adventure and cultural enrichment.

The initiative began in 2015 with the establishment of the Menalon Trail in Arcadia, a region within the Peloponnese known for its rugged terrain and scenic views. Over the past decade, efforts have focused on enhancing the trail experience through improved signage, digital mapping, and the restoration of long-neglected paths that had fallen into disuse since the 1970s. These paths traverse diverse environments, including olive groves, pine forests, and mountain villages, creating a multifaceted hiking experience that blends nature with history.

Each trail within the network is named after significant figures from Greek mythology and history, adding a thematic layer to the journey. For instance, the 203-kilometer Hercules Trail follows the legendary hero's labors through the vineyards of Nemea, a renowned wine-producing region. This route allows hikers to explore the mountainous valleys of northeastern Arcadia, visit the Temple of Zeus, and examine Mycenaean tombs while sampling local red wines made from the agiorgitiko grape at family-owned wineries. Similarly, the Messinia Trail winds through Kalamata, historically associated with King Nestor in Homer’s *Iliad*, and serves as a hub for contemporary olive production in Greece.

Other notable trails include the Sparta Trail, which leads hikers to the remnants of ancient palaces and mansions en route to the Tomb of Leonidas, a symbol of Spartan valor. The network also includes routes that pass through UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Olympia, Epidaurus, and Mycenae, allowing visitors to engage directly with some of the most significant archaeological treasures in the Mediterranean.

Accessibility to these trails is facilitated by public transportation options, with trailheads located in accessible areas such as Corinth, Kiato, and Xylokastro, all reachable via Athens’ suburban train services. Several seasoned hiking companies offer guided tours along the Menalon Trail, providing multi-day experiences that include accommodations at local guesthouses. After completing a challenging hike, travelers can opt for relaxation and rejuvenation at luxury resorts such as Mandarin Oriental’s Costa Navarino, which opened in August 2023 in Messinia, or at Kinsterna Hotel, a restored Byzantine-era estate in Monemvasia that recently received two Michelin Hotel Keys.

In addition to the physical aspects of the trail, the Peloponnese region is set to gain further international attention due to its prominent role in Christopher Nolan’s cinematic adaptation of *The Odyssey*. Scheduled for release on July 17, the film features the Peloponnese alongside A-list actors such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. This cinematic exposure is anticipated to draw increased interest from tourists eager to experience the locations depicted in the film firsthand.
