Enugu State Govt approves massive infrastructural, tourism projects

Enugu State Governor’s administration has greenlit a series of large-scale infrastructure and tourism initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and improving public amenities. The projects, spanning roads, housing, administrative buildings, and leisure developments, were approved during a recent State Executive Council (SEC) meeting. These include the expansion of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex, the construction of thousands of housing units, and the development of high-profile tourist attractions. The SEC meeting saw multiple commissioners brief media representatives on the approved projects. Among them was Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, who outlined plans to complete and upgrade Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex in GRA, Enugu. He noted that while Wings A and B had been completed in 2015, the remaining wings, C1 through D2—had remained unfinished and deteriorated into poor condition. The upgrades aim to transform the complex with modern facilities and address issues affecting the existing wings. Additionally, the state government has authorized the construction of 1,000 fully detached terrace housing units in Enugu, consisting of four- and five-bedroom homes. Alongside this, 18,000 mass housing units are set to be developed at Gateway Estate, addressing the housing shortage and rising costs in the region. These developments will incorporate essential infrastructure such as roads, water supply, and electrical services. Another key initiative involves the immediate commencement of a 10.5km road project connecting Igogoro, Amachara, Ikpamodo, Okpo, and Amaada. This project aims to enhance connectivity in these areas. In response to recurring flood issues in parts of Nsukka, the government has approved work on flashflood points along the Nsukka major road, including the construction of five adjoining streets. Repairs to damaged drainage systems and clearing of blockages are part of the plan to mitigate flooding risks. To support infrastructure maintenance and intervention efforts, the Exco also approved the purchase of more than 30 pieces of light equipment for the Ministry of Works. These tools are intended to reduce the financial burden associated with emergency and routine maintenance tasks. Dame Ugochi Madueke, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, highlighted the approval of three major tourism projects. These include the Ovu Lake Golf Resort at Akpawfu in Nkanu East Local Government Area, which will feature an 18-hole championship golf course, a luxury hotel with over 100 rooms, a 600-seat conference center, and additional recreational facilities such as boat regattas, landscaped gardens, and sports courts. Another project involves the development of the Akwuke and Attakwu tourism sites in Enugu South and Nkanu West LGAs, respectively. These areas are described as possessing natural beauty and potential for eco-tourism. Additionally, the Okpatu, Awhum Cable Car Project is set to provide scenic transport options, with cable cars planned at Okpatu, Awhum, and Awgu. These developments align with the administration's broader goal of elevating Enugu’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years. The projects reflect a strategic focus on diversifying the state’s economic base beyond traditional sectors and promoting sustainable growth through improved infrastructure and tourism. The state executive council’s decisions mark a significant shift in prioritizing both urban development and rural revitalization.
