Enugu Gov’t to distribute agric inputs for 63,000 farmers

The Enugu State Government announced plans to distribute agricultural inputs to 63,000 smallholder farmers beginning on Tuesday, July 21st, as part of measures aimed at boosting local food production and improving rural livelihoods. The initiative, unveiled during a State Executive Council meeting held in Enugu, includes the provision of free fertilizers, agrochemicals, rice seeds, maize seeds, and pepper and tomato seeds. This marks an expansion from last year’s program, which benefited around 40,000 farmers. The move comes amid heightened concerns over public health, particularly due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and parts of Uganda, prompting the state to activate all previously established isolation centres. The distribution of agricultural inputs is set to begin with the governor officially launching the initiative on Tuesday. A total of 260 wards across the state will receive the supplies under strict monitoring to ensure that only registered smallholder farmers benefit from the program. According to Dr. Patrick Ubru, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, the initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on farmers and help them increase their incomes. He emphasized that the beneficiaries must be identifiable and their farms properly documented to allow for effective tracking and oversight. In addition to the agricultural push, the state government approved the hiring of 4,698 more teachers to enhance educational standards in its Smart Green Schools. These schools, modeled after the successful Owo Campus, aim to provide students with practical, skill-based learning environments. Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, the Commissioner for Education, highlighted that the additional staff will ensure uniform quality across all 267 Smart Green Schools. The expansion also includes intensifying efforts to complete the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation (CELI), located within the Enugu State College of Education (Technical). This facility is designed to support both educators and young innovators by offering training programs and resources to develop entrepreneurial and technical skills. The state's commitment to education extends beyond classroom instruction. Prof. Mbah noted that CELI will serve as a platform for supporting youth with innovative ideas and patentable solutions, helping them commercialize their work. This approach reflects a broader strategy to create sustainable opportunities for the younger generation and align education with economic growth. Meanwhile, the Department of Health has taken proactive steps in response to the Ebola outbreak. Prof. George Ugwu, the Commissioner for Health, revealed that all isolation centres originally built during the COVID-19 pandemic will be reactivated and prepared for immediate use. Given Enugu’s status as a gateway state with direct international flight connections, the decision underscores the government’s readiness to address potential public health threats swiftly. The health commissioner also mentioned that discussions during the Executive Council meeting led to approval for expediting ongoing hospital expansion projects to improve healthcare infrastructure. The initiatives announced by the Mbah administration reflect a multi-faceted approach to governance, addressing key areas such as agriculture, education, and public health. By investing in rural development and expanding access to quality education, the state seeks to strengthen its socio-economic foundation. At the same time, the activation of isolation centres highlights the importance of preparedness in the face of emerging health challenges. As the governor prepares to launch the agricultural input distribution, the focus remains on delivering tangible benefits to residents while maintaining vigilance against regional health risks.
