Entire Ram Mandir management needs to go: Nripendra Misra flags deep flaws

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into allegations of financial irregularities concerning donations made at the newly constructed Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. This development comes amid growing concerns and political tensions over the management and transparency of the temple’s finances. During a recent visit to Ayodhya, Yogi addressed the issue directly, urging both devotees and political entities to exercise restraint and await the outcome of the ongoing investigation before making further claims or criticisms.

The SIT comprises three members: Vijay Vishwas Pant, an IAS officer serving as the Divisional Commissioner in Lucknow; Kiran S, an IPS officer holding the rank of Inspector General (Range); and Neel Ratan, a Special Secretary in the Finance Department. The team was officially constituted on June 14, following a formal request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the operations of the temple. The trust has consistently maintained that all transactions have been meticulously documented and handled transparently. However, the allegations persist, prompting the need for an independent probe to uncover the truth behind the claims.

The controversy initially arose when Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Pawan Pandey, a former MLA from Ayodhya, claimed that donations amounting to between Rs 7 crore and Rs 7.5 crore had been misappropriated. His assertions were soon echoed by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who called for an impartial inquiry and criticized the state government for its perceived silence on the issue. Yadav also requested the release of CCTV footage related to the matter, suggesting that visual evidence might shed light on the alleged misconduct. In response, Yogi Adityanath emphasized that the SIT would ensure a thorough examination of all relevant aspects, including documentary evidence, and that any findings would serve as a solid foundation for subsequent discussions or actions.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak joined the discourse, questioning why the SP leadership had not raised similar concerns about the funds collected for the construction of the Babri Masjid, which was demolished decades ago. He accused the opposition party of focusing solely on political gains and undermining the cultural significance of the Ram Janmabhoomi site. Pathak reiterated the government’s commitment to acting upon the SIT’s findings, assuring the public that justice would be served if any wrongdoing was uncovered.

Nripendra Misra, the chairman of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Construction Committee, highlighted the broader implications of the controversy. A retired IAS officer and former principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Misra expressed concern over the lack of a formal administrative structure managing the temple’s operations. He pointed out that the current system relies heavily on volunteers, often operating under informal guidance rather than clear directives. Misra advocated for a comprehensive restructuring of the management system, emphasizing the need for professional oversight and adherence to established protocols. He noted that despite the existence of detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling donations, these guidelines appear to have been overlooked in practice.

As the SIT continues its investigation, the focus remains on verifying the accuracy of the allegations and ensuring that the temple’s management adheres to the highest standards of accountability. The probe is expected to scrutinize donation registers, vault records, and CCTV footage, providing clarity on whether any financial impropriety has occurred. With the Ram Mandir nearing completion, the stakes are high, and the outcomes of this investigation could significantly influence public perception and the temple’s future governance.
