Electric vehicle charging consumption up 154 percent in first half

Electric vehicle (EV) charging consumption in Turkey surged by 153.5% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 392,252 megawatt-hours (MWh). This growth followed a significant increase in charging sessions, with 15.4 million sessions recorded, representing a 96.6% rise. Total charging time also grew by 137.4%, totaling 17.6 million hours. İbrahim Öz, head of the EPDK’s Energy Transformation Department, emphasized that charging network operators have continued to invest in expanding the charging infrastructure within the regulatory framework set by the authority. This investment aims to ensure both the adequacy and sustainability of the EV charging network, as well as foster a competitive market environment. The expansion of charging infrastructure has been substantial. At the beginning of 2024, there were 12,084 charging points nationwide. By early 2025, this number had risen to 26,462. As of the latest update, the total number of charging points has surpassed 45,660. Among these, 19,903 are direct current (DC) chargers, which offer faster charging speeds suitable for long-distance travel, while 25,731 are alternating current (AC) chargers, commonly used for home and public parking areas. Additionally, 26 mobile charging units are available, providing flexibility for remote locations or temporary needs. This growth in charging infrastructure reflects broader trends in the transition toward cleaner energy sources and reduced carbon emissions. The surge in EV adoption is also influenced by policy measures aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence and promoting renewable energy solutions. With more charging options becoming accessible, the convenience of owning an electric vehicle continues to improve, encouraging further uptake among consumers.
