The recent study conducted by the Latino Policy and Issues Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has revealed the severe economic consequences of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles, particularly affecting Latinx-owned businesses. According to the findings, these operations, which took place in June 2025, caused a dramatic drop in customer traffic and led to millions of dollars in estimated losses among local merchants. The study analyzed commercial establishments within a one-mile radius of nine locations where ICE operations occurred. It found that formal businesses, such as restaurants, stores, and other retail spaces, saw a decline of approximately 46,000 visits over just two weeks. This translates into an estimated loss of $3.16 million. The researchers emphasized that this figure only accounts for registered businesses, excluding informal vendors such as food trucks and street vendors, who are common in Latinx business districts. Therefore, the actual financial impact could have been significantly higher. A survey of 75 Latinx entrepreneurs in Los Angeles County further underscored the severity of the situation. All respondents reported a noticeable decrease in customers and sales following the raids. Many described a lasting effect on their businesses, with some noting that they had lost up to half of their clientele. These losses were compounded by the ongoing stress and fear associated with the presence of federal agents in their communities. Nearly 95% of the surveyed entrepreneurs still faced financial difficulties more than a year after the increased ICE activity. Among them, many had to work longer hours, reduce staff, or take on additional debt to keep their businesses operational. The financial strain has persisted, creating a cycle of instability for many small business owners. Beyond the economic toll, the study documented adverse effects on the mental and physical well-being of the affected individuals. Over 76% of the participants reported negative impacts on their health and overall wellness linked to the stress of the raids. Symptoms included gastrointestinal issues, insomnia, panic attacks, and worsening of chronic conditions. One researcher noted that many of these businesses remain in debt, barely breaking even, and continue to struggle to stay open. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has raised concerns regarding the methods used by ICE during these operations. The organization highlighted the broader implications of the raids, arguing that the disruption extends beyond individual businesses to affect entire neighborhoods. Communities with high concentrations of immigrants have experienced heightened anxiety and a sense of vulnerability, undermining both economic stability and social cohesion. As the research highlights, the repercussions of ICE actions are far-reaching.
