El Mahdi Lyoubi arrested in Morocco: The king feels insulted

A French-Moroccan rapper named El Mahdi Lyoubi was arrested at Rabat airport in Morocco after authorities claimed he had insulted the royal family. The 34-year-old artist, known for his critical lyrics targeting the Moroccan monarchy, faces potential charges that could lead to up to four years in prison. Come on, take me, blindfold me, reopen Tazmamart and throw me in.” Tazmamart was a notorious prison where individuals were detained under harsh conditions in the early 1990s for alleged conspiracy against the monarchy. At the airport, police informed Lyoubi of an existing travel ban and directed him to report to the police station in his hometown of Salé. On July 11, he received a summons from the National Criminal Police Brigade (BNPJ), a unit responsible for terrorism cases and critical journalists. Officers from the BNPJ headquarters in Casablanca interrogated him throughout July 13 before informing his family. A judge ordered pre-trial detention on July 15, with a court hearing scheduled for July 22, though it may be postponed again. The arrest has drawn support from over 500 individuals who signed a call for his release. Lyoubi is currently held at the Oukacha Prison in Casablanca, where he awaits further legal proceedings.
