Survivors of districts devastated by floods in Nepal were evacuated by helicopter to safer locations while the constant roar of helicopters echoed through the ruined city of Bidur. Some walked alone, their faces frozen in shock, as helicopters landed every few minutes at a football field within the military encampment of the village, lifting clouds of dust. Among the survivors was customs officer Omkar Joshi, 35, who spent the previous night stranded on top of a hill in the border town of Timure, which disappeared entirely. “Everything is over. Ninety percent of the population is dead, swallowed by the mud. It’s an enormous cemetery. Only sand and stones remain, soaked in human blood,” he recounted. Joshi described how hundreds of people survived by climbing nearby slopes while floodwaters raged below in the valley. “It rained all night, but we stayed put until the helicopters came to get us,” he said. Below, the devastation was etched into the broken landscape of Devighat. Sabir Miyan, a resident of the village, noted that warnings about the rapidly descending floodwaters from the mountains had helped save lives. “Many of us could have saved our lives, but everything else has vanished. Now everything is ruins,” he emphasized. Keshav Prasad Baral, 68, was rescued by helicopter after losing his wife. “It was a massive slurry of mud coming directly toward us. As it approached, it kept rising higher and higher. When I saw it enter our house, I tried to grab my wife’s hand and take her to the terrace. But she was dragged away by the mud. Four or five hours later, a helicopter came to rescue me. My wife is still somewhere under the mud. She is gone.” Another resident, Shoyam Rajbhandari, stated: “When I arrived at the Dhunge market, the flood arrived in half an hour and destroyed everything in the marketplace. People were preparing to go to work at that time. We don’t know how many are missing or dead.” Anisha Nepali also gave her account. “Everything happened in minutes; the water surged with incredible force, dragging huge rocks and tearing houses from their foundations. There was little time for anything except running to the higher parts of the mountain to save one’s life,” she said. Adrian McCallum, a glaciologist from the University of Sunshine Coast, explained: “The reality is that if you find yourself in a community located beneath a large glacier, potentially even a glacial lake where a GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) might occur, it's somewhat like a ticking time bomb. Fleeing doesn’t help.”
