Central Bank renewed currency swap with China for five years

The Argentine Central Bank (BCRA) has extended its currency swap agreement with China's People's Bank of China (PBoC) for five years, involving 130 billion yuan (approximately $19–20 billion). This agreement provides support for international reserves and bilateral trade between Argentina and China. The extension increases the validity period of the agreement from three to five years, aiming to provide greater continuity and predictability for this financial tool. The swap line includes 35 billion yuan ($5 billion), which was activated earlier in 2023 during the presidency of Alberto Fernández to address foreign exchange shortages. The agreement originated in 2009 and was expanded in 2018 under President Mauricio Macri. As of January 14, 2026, nearly 90% of the funds used in the active portion had been repaid.
