Einride bets $38M on EV charging as it scales electric trucking

Einride, a Swedish developer of electric and autonomous trucks, has announced plans to acquire EV charging startup Flipturn in a stock-based transaction valued at $38 million. The move marks Einride's first acquisition since becoming a publicly traded company following its merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) and subsequent listing on Nasdaq earlier this year. The deal is expected to finalize within the current month, according to company officials. Flipturn, established in 2022, specializes in building a software platform designed to interface with any EV charging station using the Open Charge Point Protocol, a widely accepted standard for communication among EV charging points and management systems. The startup had secured $15.5 million in venture capital funding to develop its technology. Its software provides monitoring capabilities for charging infrastructure, collects data such as vehicle battery status, driving patterns, and route information, enabling businesses to optimize their charging operations. It also supports integration with on-site solar power and energy storage solutions. Einride’s chief executive officer, Roozbeh Charli, described the acquisition as a pivotal moment in the company's expansion strategy in the United States. By integrating Flipturn’s technology, Einride aims to become more self-sufficient by offering both electric trucks and the necessary charging software to operate them effectively. This vertical integration could appeal to potential clients looking to transition to electric commercial vehicles but hesitant due to concerns about infrastructure and operational complexity. Einride is recognized globally for its innovative, cableless autonomous truck designs, often referred to as pods. However, its primary source of income comes from managing a fleet of 200 heavy-duty electric trucks deployed across Europe, North America, and the United Arab Emirates for major corporations such as Heineken, PepsiCo, and Carlsberg Sweden. Recently, the company added Amazon to its client list, though rather than selling trucks directly, Einride retains ownership and operates the vehicles through its proprietary Saga AI software. These trucks are accessible to drivers participating in Amazon’s Relay freight network, an application launched in 2017 that allows independent drivers to secure freight-hauling opportunities. The acquisition of Flipturn aligns with Einride's broader vision of creating a comprehensive solution for electric transportation. By combining its expertise in electric truck manufacturing with Flipturn’s advanced charging software, Einride positions itself to provide end-to-end services tailored for logistics and transport industries aiming to adopt sustainable practices.
