Egypt, FAO discuss support for ‘Productive Village Revival’ initiative

Egypt's Minister of Agriculture, Alaa Farouk, held discussions with AbdulHakim Elwaer, the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa, regarding enhanced collaboration to support the government’s “Productive Village Revival” initiative. The meeting focused on exploring mechanisms to coordinate with the UN agency in implementing the program, which aims to transform Egyptian villages into economically active centers rather than mere consumers of goods. The initiative emphasizes sustainable rural development by shifting the role of villages from passive recipients of services to dynamic contributors to the national economy. It targets the enhancement of youth and rural women's skills, job creation, and increased household incomes. According to Farouk, the project involves several key components, including the establishment of a unified brand for local village products, the formation of small-scale economic units within each village, and the diversification of income sources for rural residents. Environmental sustainability is another core aspect of the plan, with measures such as waste recycling and more efficient use of resources being promoted. Additionally, the initiative includes expanding contract farming practices and introducing mechanization to improve productivity. Support for livestock development through better animal breeds tailored for small-scale farmers is also part of the strategy. Promoting traditional industries like silk production and beekeeping is highlighted as a means to preserve cultural heritage while generating income. Strengthening agricultural cooperatives is viewed as crucial for empowering women and fostering community-based economic growth. Farouk emphasized that these cooperative structures will play a vital role in enhancing the financial independence of rural populations, especially among female members. Elwaer expressed admiration for Egypt’s approach to rural revitalization and confirmed the FAO’s commitment to offering technical assistance and expertise. This support is intended to ensure the long-term viability and effectiveness of the initiative, aligning it with global standards for sustainable development. The “Productive Village Revival” initiative reflects broader efforts by the Egyptian government to address challenges related to rural underdevelopment and unemployment.
