Ed Sheeran calls Gaza situation ‘unjustifiable’ after Macklemore exit furore

Ed Sheeran opened a solo concert in Philadelphia on Saturday with comments about the situation in Gaza, calling it “catastrophic and unjustifiable.” The remarks came amid controversy surrounding his tour, following the withdrawal of supporting acts in solidarity with rapper Macklemore, who was removed from the tour after making pro-Palestinian statements onstage. Sheeran performed at Lincoln Financial Field, where he expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis affecting both Israel and Palestine. Sheeran stated that the attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, were “horrific” and described the current situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.” He emphasized that his music and performances should focus on unity and humanity rather than politics. However, he acknowledged that the ongoing conflict has placed him in the center of a broader discussion about freedom of speech and the complexities of the Israel-Palestine issue. The controversy began when Macklemore, originally set to open Sheeran’s U.S. tour, was removed after making pro-Palestinian comments during a September 5 show in New Jersey. Sheeran clarified that he was not responsible for the decision, which reportedly came at the urging of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose company owns the stadium where Sheeran’s tour was scheduled to perform. Following Sheeran’s public statement on Tuesday, several supporting acts withdrew from the tour. Sheeran has performed many of his Loop Tour concerts solo, although he had previously been accompanied by the Irish folk band Beoga at each stop. Macklemore was initially replaced by Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, but they also withdrew. Finneas, Billie Eilish’s brother and musical collaborator, had been scheduled to tour with Sheeran in South America later this year but also dropped out earlier this week. Before the concert, a group of approximately 50 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the stadium. Hillary Steinberg, a 34-year-old from Philadelphia, said she had purchased tickets a year ago but ultimately received a refund and attended the demonstration instead, expressing disappointment that Sheeran did not take a stronger stance. “I was, until this week, a big Ed Sheeran fan,” Steinberg said. “I think all art is political, and all music is political, and so this choice, even though he was saying that he wasn’t complicit, is a political choice.” In contrast, Diane Savitz, a 53-year-old concertgoer from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, who had purchased tickets months in advance, defended Sheeran’s approach. She stated that she believed he had done nothing wrong and that a concert should primarily serve as a space for people to enjoy music. “A concert should be for people enjoying the music. Music should bring people together,” Savitz said. “Everyone has their right to freedom of speech, but not every platform is the place for it.” Sheeran acknowledged that he had made mistakes in handling the difficult decisions surrounding the controversy. He emphasized that his concerts have always aimed to be a safe space for everyone and that he remained committed to his fans. He expressed deep concern about the idea of venues pre-approving content for performances and indicated that he was trying to find ways to contribute to helping those affected by the conflict. He also stressed the need to listen and learn more about the situation, acknowledging that he did not yet fully understand all aspects of the crisis.
