Ebonyi marks dilapidated buildings for demolition to prevent disaster

Ebonyi State authorities have begun marking dilapidated buildings for demolition in Abakaliki to mitigate potential hazards. The Ministry of Capital City Development and Urban Planning identified a one-storey structure in the city as unsafe and scheduled its removal within the coming days. This follows a 21-day notice issued to the occupants, which has since expired. The decision came after an inspection led by Commissioner for Capital City Development and Urban Planning, Chief Richard Ugo Idike. During the visit, he confirmed that the building posed a serious risk of collapse and emphasized the necessity of its demolition to safeguard public safety. The action was part of a broader initiative to enforce building codes and ensure compliance with urban planning regulations. In addition to the one-storey building, officials inspected another structure located on Liberty Street, Abakaliki. This second building was found to be in a critical state, nearing collapse. A similar 21-day notice was issued to the owner, directing them to vacate the premises while preparations for demolition commenced. Despite the danger, some families, including children, remained inside the buildings, highlighting ongoing challenges in enforcing safety measures. During the inspection, Idike was joined by key personnel from the ministry, including the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Martina Obya, and the Head of Department, Town Planning, Mrs. Esther Nwite. They were also accompanied by members of the ministry's task force. The inspection was a continuation of efforts initiated on July 7, 2026, when removal notices were handed to several property owners and occupants of distressed buildings. Idike expressed deep concern over the persistent occupation of unsafe structures, warning that such actions endanger both human life and property. He called on residents to adhere strictly to government directives regarding distressed buildings and encouraged property owners to conduct regular maintenance and structural evaluations to prevent future incidents. The ministry reiterated its dedication to upholding building regulations and ensuring that all constructions in Ebonyi State conform to established safety standards. Officials stated that their ongoing efforts aim to create a safer and more organized urban landscape, reducing the likelihood of avoidable disasters. Officials noted that parts of both inspected buildings had already suffered partial collapses, underscoring the urgency of the situation. While some residents have been relocated, others continue to reside in these hazardous conditions, indicating a need for greater community engagement and enforcement of safety protocols. The ministry plans to intensify its monitoring activities and increase outreach to educate residents about the risks associated with living in deteriorating structures. These measures are intended to foster a culture of responsibility among property owners and promote long-term urban resilience.
