A powerful El Niño event is gaining strength in the Pacific Ocean, with new maps suggesting it could reshape winter weather across the United States in late 2026 and early 2027. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC), the warming phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, known as El Niño, is intensifying and has a greater than 90 percent chance of becoming a “very strong” event during the fall and winter months. Forecasters estimate a 69 percent likelihood that the October-to-December season will witness an unprecedented El Niño, surpassing all previously recorded events since 1950. The latest winter outlook maps, released by the CPC, highlight potential changes in both temperature and precipitation patterns. Above-normal temperatures are predicted across a wide swath of the nation, stretching from the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies through the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast. The strongest warmth is anticipated in the northern tier of the country. The maps, however, do not provide specific temperature readings or rainfall amounts, instead using color-coded indicators to show where the CPC favors above-normal, near-normal, or below-normal conditions over the three-month span. El Niño, the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, is a natural climate pattern that occurs irregularly every two to seven years. It typically brings wetter conditions to the southern U.S., including the Gulf Coast and Southeast, while making the northern U.S. and Canada warmer and drier. This year’s event, however, is expected to be exceptionally strong, with sea-surface temperatures in parts of the eastern equatorial Pacific already exceeding 2 degrees Celsius above normal. These anomalies, combined with ongoing atmospheric and oceanic conditions, support further strengthening through the end of the year. New winter outlook maps from OpenSnow suggest that the impact of this super El Niño could lead to significant variations in snowfall distribution. Above-normal snowfall is forecasted across much of the Southwest, including California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado. An active southern storm track, a common feature of strong El Niño winters, is expected to bring more frequent storm systems to these regions. California’s Central Sierra is projected to see one of the strongest signals for above-average snowfall, while Utah ski areas and parts of southern Colorado are also favored for a snowier-than-normal season. In contrast, the forecast indicates below-normal snowfall across parts of the northern U.S. and Canada, with Washington state among the regions where warmer-than-average temperatures might limit snowfall despite near-normal precipitation. While strong El Niño events often bring more active winter storm tracks, they also tend to result in warmer temperatures, which could mean that some storms produce rain rather than snow, especially in the Western U.S. The implications of this forecast extend beyond the U.S., affecting global weather patterns. For skiers and mountain communities, the prediction offers hope for a rebound following a challenging 2025–26 snow season in many western regions. OpenSnow anticipates the most favorable period for snowfall in key mountain areas between January and March, when the El Niño influence is expected to peak. The forecast also suggests above-normal snowfall in the Alps, particularly from France into western Austria, and in Scandinavia. However, some lower-elevation Alpine resorts may still face challenges due to higher-than-average temperatures and periods of rain. Japan, known for its heavy snowfall, is projected to see below-normal snowfall and above-average temperatures.
