Drought in Europe: Austria helps farmers with more than €240 million

Austria has announced a financial aid package worth over €240 million to support farmers affected by severe drought conditions sweeping across Europe. The government's measures aim to alleviate the economic strain caused by the unprecedented dry spell, which has led to damages estimated at more than €1 billion in the agricultural sector. This comes amid growing concerns among European farmers, who are struggling with the consequences of extreme weather patterns linked to climate change. The Austrian government’s relief plan includes the cancellation of social insurance contributions totaling €140 million for farmers. The situation has prompted calls for urgent state intervention, particularly from German agricultural organizations. German farmer associations have issued a sober assessment of this year's harvest, emphasizing the need for immediate government assistance. Joachim Rukwied, president of the German Farmers' Association, stated that farms require essential resources such as seed and diesel fuel to prepare for future planting seasons. He warned that without adequate liquidity, many farms would struggle to fund upcoming harvests. Rukwied urged policymakers to lower taxes on diesel and increase subsidies for fertilizers and plant protection products to ease the burden on farmers. In Germany, Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer of the Christian Social Union (CSU) has indicated support for farmers affected by extreme weather, though he has not yet specified particular measures. According to his ministry, responsibility initially lies with regional governments to assess potential additional payments related to extreme weather events. A national-level evaluation will determine whether the situation qualifies as an event of national significance, with results expected by late August. Environmental groups have called for greater preparedness within the agricultural sector to address the long-term impacts of climate change. The Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) emphasized the importance of effective climate adaptation strategies rather than continued requests for cheap agricultural diesel and emergency funding. They argue that sustainable practices must be prioritized to mitigate future risks associated with increasingly frequent and severe weather events.
