Waterworks on the Danube: A complete collapse is possible

The Duna Menti Regionális Vízmű Zrt. (DMRV Zrt.) has issued a stark warning about the potential collapse of its water supply network due to excessive usage during the current heatwave. In a statement published on their website, the company emphasized the urgent need for water conservation among local governments and residents within its service area. Since their initial call for restraint on Friday, they have observed not a decrease but an increase in water consumption, prompting immediate action to implement water restrictions to ensure basic household supplies.

The company highlighted that during periods of extreme heat, maintaining a continuous and safe drinking water supply is not merely a matter of comfort but a critical necessity. However, this requires cooperation from the public. Despite implementing first-level water restrictions on certain settlements last Friday—prohibiting activities such as watering lawns, filling pools, or washing cars—the water consumption continued to rise. As a result, Szada became the first settlement in the service area to experience a complete halt in water supply due to network overload early Monday morning.

Excessive water use, which exceeds average demand by up to twice, poses physical and structural risks to water sources, production wells, and drinking water distribution networks. Over the weekend, water demand was 55 percent higher than usual, even without any garden-related activities typically contributing to increased usage. This surge in demand has led to localized water shortages in areas along the right bank of the Danube, particularly in higher elevations. Specific regions such as Üröm, Pomáz, and Solymár have already experienced sections of the network where potable water is unavailable. If there is no significant reduction in water usage volume, more parts of these towns—and potentially other settlements—are likely to face similar situations.

On Monday, the company requested second-level preparedness measures from all municipalities, emphasizing the need for collaboration to prevent the total collapse of the network and subsequent water shortages. These measures now extend beyond residential users to include economic actors within the communities. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, water consumption remains critically high compared to a normal workday and even surpasses typical weekend summer demand levels. The systems in place are unable to adequately replenish the missing water volume in storage basins.

The company warned that if consumers do not limit their water use strictly to essential needs within the next few hours, a full collapse of the DMRV Zrt. network could occur. Should this happen, the restoration process might take an extended period. The primary goal of reducing non-essential water consumption is to ensure sufficient drinking water for fundamental human needs such as drinking, cooking, personal hygiene, and the operation of critical institutions, as well as firefighting operations.

The situation underscores the delicate balance between meeting essential demands and preventing infrastructure failure under unprecedented stress. With temperatures continuing to climb and water usage showing no signs of abating, the challenge lies in effectively communicating the urgency of conservation to both individuals and businesses. The company's repeated calls for restraint reflect the growing concern over the sustainability of the water supply system amid prolonged heatwaves and increasing demand.
