Man who killed grandfather with single punch in Leicestershire park admits manslaughter

A man has admitted to killing his grandfather with a single punch during an altercation in a Leicestershire park, leading to the elderly man's death. The incident occurred on 6 April when Joshua Moore, 33, attacked James McKeown, 62, while both were in Beaumont Leys Park in Leicester. According to Leicestershire Police, Moore was riding a quad bike with a young child and confronted McKeown, who was walking home from a nearby pub. The confrontation escalated when Moore struck McKeown in the face, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. Moore then placed the victim in the recovery position and left the scene without seeking medical assistance. Approximately an hour later, Moore approached a police officer at the crime scene and confessed to the act.

At Leicester Crown Court, Moore pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter. During the hearing, it was revealed that an examination of Moore’s mobile phone showed he used the time between the assault and his eventual surrender to organize personal matters, including canceling a scheduled tattoo appointment. Judge Timothy Spencer KC acknowledged Moore’s admission as courageous but emphasized the gravity of the offense, noting that unlawful killing is a severe charge. The judge stated that Moore would receive credit for his plea but warned that a prison sentence was likely. The court adjourned the sentencing until 31 July to allow for the preparation of pre-sentence reports.

McKeown, known in the community as "Spider," had lived in the area for nearly two decades. His family expressed their grief over his death, stating that he was well-regarded among neighbors. Detective Inspector Kevin Hames from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) Murder Investigation Team condemned Moore’s actions, describing the attack as entirely unprovoked. Hames highlighted that Moore had a clear choice to avoid conflict and that his decision to use violence was reckless. He criticized Moore for failing to seek immediate help after the assault, despite witnessing the severity of McKeown’s injuries. Hames also noted that Moore’s presence in the park on a quad bike was inappropriate and contributed to the dangerous situation.
