Dubai population passed 4.5 million by end of 2025

Dubai's population surpassed 4.5 million by the end of 2025, according to newly released government statistics. The emirate's population reached 4.58 million, marking a 7.5 per cent increase compared to the previous year. This growth reflects continued urban expansion and economic activity in one of the fastest-growing cities in the Middle East. The figures were disclosed by the Dubai Data and Statistics Establishment, operating under the umbrella of Digital Dubai. These statistics underscore a consistent pattern of population growth that has defined Dubai over recent decades. According to the data, the average number of people present in Dubai during peak daytime hours reached 6.392 million. This includes both residents and approximately 1.812 million temporary visitors, primarily workers and tourists. The measurement of this population surge was facilitated by the Dubai Population Now platform, which was sanctioned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence. This system integrates administrative records, smart technologies, and real-time data collection to provide accurate insights into demographic trends. Younus Al Nasser, CEO of the Dubai Data and Statistics Establishment, emphasized that the population growth monitoring initiative offers a real-time snapshot of the emirate's strategic direction. He noted that the increase aligns with broader economic indicators, including a 5.4 per cent rise in Dubai's GDP in 2025 and a 5 per cent increase in international visitor arrivals, totaling 19.6 million. Historically, Dubai's population has expanded dramatically. From just 12,000 inhabitants in 1881, the city has grown nearly 380 times over, reflecting its transformation into a global economic powerhouse. Traditional census methods were used until 2005, after which Dubai adopted a continuous, real-time population tracking model. The 7.5 per cent growth rate observed in 2025 is among the highest recorded in the emirate's history. The previous record was set in the 1980 census, with an 8.2 per cent increase. This rapid growth has been driven by ambitious development strategies aimed at positioning Dubai as a leading global hub for business, tourism, and innovation. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has played a central role in shaping the city's trajectory over the past two decades. His leadership has been instrumental in achieving milestones such as the completion of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and the establishment of iconic infrastructure like Dubai Marina, the Dubai Metro, and major retail destinations including Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. Under his guidance, Dubai successfully navigated the challenges posed by the global pandemic, exemplified by the successful hosting of Expo 2020 Dubai, which was postponed but ultimately delivered as planned. The city also hosted the COP28 climate conference in 2023, contributing to international discussions on environmental sustainability. To accommodate ongoing population growth, Dubai continues to invest heavily in infrastructure and transportation. Recent announcements include plans for the Metro Gold Line, a project valued at Dh34 billion designed to serve over 1.5 million residents. This extension will add 18 new stations and link multiple areas of the city, enhancing connectivity to real estate developments and integrating with Etihad Rail services. The first phase of tunnelling for the Metro Blue Line has already been completed, signaling progress in the city's commitment to modernizing its transit network. As Dubai expands, these initiatives aim to ensure that the city can sustain its economic momentum while providing adequate infrastructure for its growing population.
