DTI, Converge launch AI, digital transformation programs for MSMEs

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Converge ICT Solutions Inc. officially launched a series of programs aimed at supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies. The initiative was announced on Tuesday, August 11, during the inauguration of the DTI Bagong Pilipinas AI and Scale-Up Center in Manila. This new facility is designed to serve as a hub for MSMEs, startups, and entrepreneurs seeking to integrate AI into their operations and enhance competitiveness through digital transformation. The center spans approximately 380 square meters and includes dedicated spaces such as co-working stations, meeting pods, training rooms, startup zones, and technology showcases. It provides free access to AI-related training, technological tools, and networking opportunities. MSMEs and aspiring entrepreneurs can either visit directly or reserve slots via email at startup@dti.gov.ph for scheduled sessions. The facility aims to assist businesses in learning AI tools, testing potential solutions, and connecting with mentors, technology providers, industry experts, and government collaborators. DTI Assistant Secretary Nylah Rizza Bautista highlighted the significance of the center, emphasizing its role in guiding MSMEs that lack initial direction in AI adoption. She noted that AI has transitioned from being a futuristic concept to a current reality influencing how businesses function, compete, and grow. The center serves as a bridge for these businesses to explore AI applications and leverage digital advancements effectively. Converge founder and CEO Dennis Anthony Uy outlined the company’s strategy for enabling MSME transformation, which centers on three key pillars: AI readiness infrastructure, reliable connectivity, and workforce upskilling. He explained that AI implementation requires robust infrastructure, including access to data ecosystems and specialized software that many smaller businesses previously could not afford. To address this gap, the DTI is collaborating with Converge SME Solutions to offer high-speed, enterprise-grade fiber connectivity tailored for the initiative. Uy also stressed the importance of equipping workers with practical AI literacy and data management skills. By doing so, he argued, AI should complement human capabilities rather than replace them. The center will provide targeted training for entrepreneurs, managers, and employees, ensuring they can harness emerging technologies effectively within their organizations. The AI and Scale-Up Center is part of a broader digital transformation partnership between Converge and the DTI, which was formalized in November 2025. Converge SME Solutions senior vice president Dindo Marzan described the program as responsive to the challenges faced by small businesses, particularly their limited IT resources and lean operational structures. The initiative includes a range of support measures, such as business broadband and e-commerce connectivity solutions, designed to facilitate smoother digital integration. As the center opens its doors, it represents a critical step toward empowering local businesses with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly digital economy. With ongoing support from both public and private sectors, the hope is that these programs will catalyze innovation and growth among MSMEs in the Philippines.
