Dresden: Prison sentences for stabbing in the Dresden tramway

Dresden: Two men have been sentenced to prison terms following a knife attack on a young American man in a tram in Dresden. The verdict was delivered nearly a year after the incident occurred, with the court ruling against two Syrian nationals. One defendant received a three-year juvenile detention sentence for causing permanent injuries through a facial cut, while his co-defendant was given a one-year and eight-month prison term, which has been suspended on probation conditions. The attack took place on the night of August 24, 2025, during a tram ride in Dresden. According to the court's judgment, the 21-year-old attacker used a utility knife to slash the face of the victim, a 21-year-old American named John Rudat. The assault followed a confrontation between Rudat and another accused, who had previously yelled at and hit Rudat’s girlfriend. When Rudat attempted to intervene, the 22-year-old Syrian defendant struck him. Shortly afterward, the 21-year-old Syrian, who had initially remained uninvolved, suddenly joined in and stabbed Rudat across the face, resulting in severe lacerations to his eyelid, nose, lips, and mouth. Rudat now bears a lasting scar from the attack. The 22-year-old defendant was found not directly involved in the stabbing. Judge Andreas Ziegel stated that although he was not part of the actual attack, he was responsible for the “significant conflict” with his girlfriend, whom the court claimed he had physically assaulted. Additionally, he had struck Rudat and kicked his companion in the chest. The judge emphasized that there were no prior agreements or instructions from the 22-year-old to the 21-year-old regarding the attack, and that the younger man acted entirely on his own initiative. The court considered the circumstances of the 21-year-old’s life, including his escape from Syria and the lack of proper upbringing due to these experiences. Judge Ziegel noted that the individual had endured violence both in war and within his family, and the migration experience had further burdened him. The application of juvenile law aims to influence such individuals to prevent similar incidents in the future. During the trial, both defendants expressed remorse and apologized for their actions. They admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the attack, and the 21-year-old also mentioned drug use on the day of the incident. The judge pointed out that the case gained significant media attention, with some reporting being perceived as unsuitable. Political figures, including members of the AfD party, were also criticized for using the situation to stoke public sentiment against young Syrians. The court stressed its efforts to maintain objectivity throughout the proceedings. Both defendants faced additional charges related to ten other offenses, including dangerous bodily harm. They have minor previous convictions and have been under investigation for almost eleven months. The verdict is not yet final, and either party can appeal within a week.
