Sombor Film Festival July 9-12: Films from 6 countries compete for prizes, and admission to all programs is free

The Eighth Sombor Film Festival will take place from July 9th to 12th, organized by the Cultural Center 'Laza Kostić' in Sombor. This year’s edition highlights regional authorial works, films by young directors, Slovak cinematography, and programs dedicated to Sombor’s cinematic heritage. The festival’s theme, 'Light and Shadows of Reality,' encourages audiences to find hope and humanity through cinema. Selector Hadži-Aleksandar Đurović emphasizes the importance of art in today’s dark world and notes the symbolic significance of the number eight, representing renewal. The festival celebrates the 150th anniversary of Ernest Bošnjak, a pioneer of Serbian cinema, whose name is associated with the festival’s awards. The main competitive program features five regional films, including Serbian dramas, Croatian, Romanian, and Hungarian entries, while a selection of young filmmakers showcases emerging talent.

The 13th edition of the Bašta Festa film festival will take place from July 2nd to 5th in Bajina Bašta, Serbia, showcasing 26 short films from 24 countries around the world. This year’s festival, themed "Čukni u drvo," aims to bring together young filmmakers and established names in the industry under the open skies of Park Borići. The event promises to feature a diverse lineup of films, many of which will have their Serbian premieres during this gathering. Among the highlights is the competition for the main prize, the Golden Imagination, awarded to the best film, as well as awards for Best Male and Female Performance and two special prizes.

The festival's main program is divided into six thematic blocks, offering domestic audiences bold and thought-provoking stories. Some of these films have already been successfully screened at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Sandance, and Sarajevo, while three will make their world premiere in Bajina Bašta. Each of the 26 entries will compete for recognition within the jury, which includes notable figures in the Serbian film scene. The jury consists of renowned actor Dragan Mićanović, producer Marija Maša Lero, known for her work on award-winning films such as "How Is Everything So Green Here?" and "The Last Picture of the Father," and director Gvido Kazale, founder and selector of the Italian Adriatic Film Festival.

Dragan Mićanović, reflecting on his personal connection to the festival, recalled attending the first Bašta Festa over 13 years ago with a short film titled "Bašta," created by students of production studies. He described the experience as memorable, highlighting the hospitality of the hosts, swimming in the Drina River, and enjoying time with friends. Now, after more than a decade, he eagerly anticipates reuniting with the individuals who organize and nurture the festival, expressing hope that they continue to persevere despite the challenges faced by the profession today. His sentiment echoes the broader theme of the festival—celebrating creativity amidst difficult times.

In addition to the main awards, there is also a category dedicated to the Best Film selected by the Young Jury. This year's members include high school students Mario Jašić, Jovan Mandić, Teodora Petronijević, Sofija Živković, and Mateja Josipović. They will collaborate with director Tara Gajović throughout the festival. Gajović emphasized the value of working with young people, noting that their interpretations often reveal aspects overlooked by adults, guided by personal experiences. Through critical analysis of both film and life, she believes that new meanings and perspectives can emerge, enriching understanding of the world. Her own short film, "Across the Threshold," was part of the Bašta Pitch program last year and had its premiere at the famous Cannes Film Festival.

Another highlight of the festival is the award for Best Cinematography, known as the Golden Visualization, presented in collaboration with Cineplanet Rental. This year, the honor will go to cinematographer Mladen Teofilović, whose work has appeared in several domestic films such as "The Sun Will Never Rise Again" and "No One Said Anything," as well as in the third season of the series "Shadows Over the Balkans." The festival will officially open on Thursday evening with the rising star and successful young actor Ognjen Mićović. On Sunday, the closing night will feature the award-winning film "Yugo Florida," directed by Vladimir Tagić.

Beyond the main program, attendees can expect a variety of educational sessions and musical performances, adding to the richness of the festival experience. As the Bašta Festa continues to grow, it remains a significant platform for emerging talent and a celebration of cinematic artistry in Serbia.
