Ljubljana's day centre for the homeless celebrates 20 years

The 20th anniversary of the Daily Center for Homeless People in Ljubljana was celebrated with a heartfelt ceremony that brought together homeless individuals, volunteers, and supporters. The event took place in the heart of the city, where the center has been serving as a vital community hub for two decades. This milestone marked not just a celebration of past achievements but also a reflection on the ongoing journey of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for those in need.

Established under the auspices of the Society of Volunteers of the Vincentian Association of Goodwill, the daily center began its operations with modest beginnings. Initially, volunteers distributed food at various locations around Ljubljana, including the Ambroz Square, near the Old Church in Šiška, and before the Križanke. These early efforts were driven by a simple yet powerful belief: that everyone deserves a home. Over time, these informal gatherings evolved into structured activities, laying the foundation for a more organized approach to supporting the homeless population.

In 2005, the Sisters of Ursulines offered their premises in Plečnik's Passage, which became the permanent location of the center. Despite the initial poor condition of the space and limited resources, the team’s determination led to significant improvements. With financial support from the Missionary Brotherhood, contributions from donors, assistance from friends, and the expertise of master craftsman Francija Rotarj, along with many dedicated hands, the center underwent a thorough renovation. On May 30, 2006, the center was officially opened and blessed, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its mission.

From the outset, the center focused on providing basic necessities such as food, hygiene services, laundry facilities, clothing distribution, and basic healthcare. As the years progressed, the range of services expanded significantly. Meals were initially purchased and shared, but soon the center introduced communal breakfasts and began preparing meals in kitchen workshops. The cultivation of vegetables in the garden at Miren Castle, followed by donations from local stores, enabled regular meal preparation. The involvement of homeless individuals in meal preparation became a cornerstone of the center’s operations, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose among participants.

The center quickly grew beyond its physical boundaries, extending its support to other areas. It established shelters and multiple housing units, offering on-the-ground visits and collaborating with homeless individuals on work projects. Throughout the years, the program attracted a large number of participants, though some chose to leave permanently. The center emphasized the importance of dignified farewells, ensuring that even those who left had a proper burial site.

Over the past twenty years, the center has not only transformed the lives of countless individuals but also shaped the lives of numerous volunteers and employees. Through their work, they have learned to listen, resolve conflicts, set boundaries, see people in crisis, and understand themselves better. The journey has not been without challenges—conflicts, the search for appropriate boundaries, and discussions about fairness have all played a role in shaping the center’s ethos. Celebrations and outings, such as literary evenings, Christmas celebrations, New Year’s festivities, creative workshops, and other events, have enriched everyday life and encouraged collaboration among participants.

Looking ahead, the center remains committed to its founding principles while adapting to the evolving needs of the community. Its continued success hinges on the collective effort of volunteers, staff, and supporters, all working towards a common goal: to create a safe, welcoming space where everyone feels valued and supported. As the center moves forward, it carries with it the legacy of twenty years of service, resilience, and hope.
