DNA testing shows what's really in Western Australian fish and chip shop 'shark' filets

A study conducted by Murdoch University researchers, in collaboration with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), found that many shark products sold in Western Australian fish-and-chips shops are either ambiguously labeled or mislabeled. Out of 167 cooked shark products tested from 132 shops, 56% had vague labels like 'shark,' 'flake,' or 'fish and chips,' while 35% were mislabeled, meaning the species claimed did not match the genetic test results. Researchers identified 16 different species, including 11 shark species, highlighting the lack of transparency in seafood labeling. Although some species are classified as threatened globally, only one sample was found to contain a species listed as threatened under Australian conservation laws. The study suggests that mislabeling may stem from complex supply chains rather than intentional fraud, and recommends clearer labeling standards, origin disclosure, and routine DNA audits to improve transparency.
