Greece orders partial evacuation of Athens suburb as wildfire burns

George Clooney and his family have evacuated their home in southeastern France as wildfires rage in the region, according to a letter sent to the mayor of Brignoles, a town near the property. The Hollywood actor and his wife, Amal Clooney, a prominent human rights lawyer, expressed uncertainty about whether their home would survive the current crisis. Their agent confirmed the evacuation in a message to Didier Bremond, the mayor of Brignoles, which lies approximately 90 kilometers east of Marseille. The letter emphasized the family's commitment to supporting the recovery efforts of the affected community. The fire near Brignoles erupted on Wednesday afternoon and consumed roughly 100 hectares of land, according to local officials. This blaze is significantly smaller compared to the massive wildfires that have recently engulfed areas around Bordeaux in southwestern France. Earlier in the week, thousands of residents in that region were evacuated due to the intense fires, but many have since returned home following reports that the flames have been brought under control. In a statement released on Friday, Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas noted that the situation in the western and southwestern districts of Bordeaux has stabilized, with the fire now confined to its designated perimeter. She mentioned that favorable overnight weather conditions, lower temperatures and increased humidity, helped contain the blaze. Despite these developments, water-bombing helicopters continue to operate in the area, as the threat of renewed high temperatures and stronger winds persists later in the day. The Clooneys received French citizenship in December of last year, alongside their twin children, Ella and Alexander. They acquired their estate in France in 2021 and have been residing there with their family. During an interview with Esquire in October, Clooney referred to their French property as their primary residence, highlighting its significance in their lives. Meanwhile, in Greece, authorities have issued a partial evacuation order for parts of Haidari, a suburb located west of Athens, due to a forest fire breaking out on a nearby mountain. Greek Civil Protection officials sent out an emergency mobile phone alert regarding the situation. The fire started in the Agios Vasilios area of Boeotia on Friday morning and is currently being addressed by over 105 firefighters and 29 vehicles. However, the firefighting efforts are complicated by gale-force winds that hinder the operation of water-dropping aircraft. Only one helicopter has managed to take on water from the sea to combat the blaze. Across Europe, the combination of extreme heat and dry conditions continues to pose challenges for emergency services. Recent scientific research indicates that human-induced climate change has contributed to the creation of these harsh environmental conditions, offering little relief to those working to manage the ongoing crises. According to the Reuters Climate Monitor, the average temperature across Europe on Friday reached 24.9 degrees Celsius, surpassing historical norms by 3.3 degrees Celsius. These elevated temperatures have led to increased instances of air pollution, with particular concern over the emission of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, linked to serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and respiratory ailments. As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on managing the immediate threats posed by the wildfires while addressing the broader implications of climate change on the continent.
