NCC hands over 2 digital facilities to Enugu govt

In a significant step toward advancing Nigeria's digital economy, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has entered into a 15-year lease agreement with the Enugu State Government, transferring ownership of the Digital Industrial Park and Learning Centre to the state. The handover took place on Tuesday at Government House in Enugu, marking a key milestone in the administration of Governor Peter Mbah's efforts to position the state as a hub for digital innovation and technological advancement. The move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s broader vision of growing Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy driven by productivity, innovation, and private-sector growth. The lease agreement involves the transfer of two critical facilities, the Digital Industrial Park and the Learning Centre, located within Enugu. These will now be operated under the names Enugu Talent City and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute. According to officials, the transition aims to leverage these infrastructures to foster digital skills, support startups, attract investment, and generate employment opportunities in the region. The facilities are intended to serve as platforms for innovation, entrepreneurship, and human capital development, supporting both individual and corporate growth in the digital sector. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, emphasized that the arrangement reflects the alignment of the commission’s goals with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration. He praised Governor Mbah for his commitment to transforming Enugu into a digital economic powerhouse through deliberate investments in education, infrastructure, innovation, and digital capacity. Maida expressed confidence that the Enugu administration is well-positioned to achieve the objectives for which the facilities were originally created. During the ceremony, Maida outlined the expectations for the new setup, stating that the partnership should help Enugu become a leading destination for digital services, AI, startup incubation, outsourcing, and technology-enabled enterprises. He highlighted that the facilities are not just physical structures but platforms meant to develop the people and enterprises that will drive Nigeria’s digital economy. Maida reiterated that while completing physical infrastructure is crucial, it is only the beginning. Innovation, he argued, comes from people, ideas, and entrepreneurs, and partnerships are vital to bringing these elements together. Maida also commended Governor Mbah for investing in Smart Green Schools, a project aimed at equipping students with the necessary tools to thrive in a technologically evolving world. He pointed out that while infrastructure is essential, it alone cannot ensure long-term prosperity. The Smart Green Schools initiative demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to education, incorporating digital learning facilities, robotics labs, and AI centers to prepare children for the challenges and opportunities of the future. Governor Mbah acknowledged the importance of the digital economy in achieving President Tinubu’s goal of a $1 trillion national economy. He noted that much of this growth would originate from the states, emphasizing the role of Enugu in contributing to this vision. Mbah highlighted the potential of AI, estimating that it could add up to $20 trillion to the global economy by 2030.
