Replacing Connemann is Johannes Steiniger, a rising star within the CDU. Unlike his predecessor, Steiniger does not have a strong track record in economic policy. His political career began in 2013 when he entered the Bundestag at age 26. It took him 13 years to secure his first ministerial position, highlighting his more gradual ascent compared to other high-profile CDU figures. Steiniger’s qualifications stem primarily from his roles as head of the regional group in Rhineland-Palatinate and general secretary of the CDU there. Steiniger’s appointment has sparked mixed reactions. Some within the party acknowledge his potential, describing him as one of the CDU’s brightest talents despite his slower climb. Others remain skeptical about whether he can effectively fill the shoes left by Connemann, particularly in terms of influencing broader economic policies and maintaining strong ties within the party hierarchy.
