ZAUS health authorities have identified shredded iceberg lettuce sold by Taco Bell as the source of a cyclosporiasis outbreak, which has affected over 1,600 people nationwide since early May. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traced the contamination to a single supplier in central Mexico, Taylor Farms de Mexico, which has since removed all iceberg lettuce from the US market. The parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, causes severe diarrhea and is typically contracted through consumption of contaminated food or water. While the illness can be treated with antibiotics, it often goes undiagnosed due to limited detection by standard lab tests.
