Dh80 million Dubai Creek Lights project to illuminate area's rich history

Dubai has launched an ambitious Dh80 million lighting project aimed at highlighting the historical and cultural significance of Dubai Creek, a central feature of the emirate’s urban landscape. The Dubai Creek Lights initiative, announced on Wednesday, spans eight kilometers and involves the installation of 5,000 lighting units. These lights will be visible over 450 meters above ground, transforming the area into a prominent nighttime attraction. The project is set to be completed by the first quarter of 2027 and is being executed under the direction of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. The Dubai Creek Lights project encompasses several key locations, including Creek Quay, the Creek Promenade at the Gold Souq, the Creek entrance at Infinity Bridge, Al Shindagha Historic District, Bur Dubai Souq, and Al Seef Marina. Each of these sites will receive specialized lighting designed to reflect their unique architectural and cultural attributes. The initiative includes enhancements to promenades, creek entrances, building facades, and waterfront walkways, all aimed at improving both aesthetics and functionality during evening hours. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, director general of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the historical importance of Dubai Creek, describing it as a crucial artery for trade and commerce throughout the emirate’s development. He noted that the Creek has been a witness to pivotal moments in Dubai’s evolution and that the new lighting project seeks to revive this legacy. According to bin Ghalita, the initiative aims to celebrate the Creek’s cultural heritage and provide a distinct nighttime experience for both residents and tourists. This effort aligns with Dubai’s broader goal of becoming a globally recognized city known for its beauty and attractiveness. Bader Anwahi, chief executive of the Public Facilities Agency at the municipality, highlighted how the project would elevate the visitor experience in one of Dubai’s most frequented areas. He described Dubai Creek Lights as a landmark endeavor that combines architectural elegance, historical depth, and cultural richness. The lighting system will incorporate advanced technological solutions tailored to the specific characteristics of each location. Anwahi explained that the design focuses on emphasizing waterfronts, traditional markets, and historic structures while ensuring visual comfort and pedestrian safety. Historically, Dubai Creek played a critical role in guiding ships and traditional trading dhows, which relied on the lights along its banks for navigation.
