A group of archaeologists and researchers have filed a criminal complaint against Diego Prieto Hernández and 25 other officials from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) over alleged damage to archaeological heritage. The case concerns the construction of the Parque de la Memoria Báalam Tun in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, which they claim was built in violation of federal laws and resulted in the destruction of at least 47 Mayan monuments. These monuments were allegedly mutilated, destroyed, and their remaining stones used to build 'false' monuments within the park, intended as a tourist attraction. The complaint seeks to investigate the responsibility of 26 INAH officials, including former director Diego Prieto Hernández and current director Patricia Ledesma Gallegos. The evidence includes photographs, technical inspections, academic publications, previous complaints, and testimonies from workers involved in the construction. The complaint was submitted to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Quintana Roo on July 7 and 8, and registered under file number FED/QR/CHET/0000325/2026.
