Delhi govt to provide ₹2,500 monthly to women under Lakshmi Yojana; registrations from Aug 1

The Delhi government announced on Tuesday the launch of the "Delhi Lakshmi Yojana," a new initiative aimed at providing monthly financial assistance to eligible women. Under this scheme, beneficiaries will receive ₹2,500 each month, according to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Registration for the program begins on August 1, and the first installment is expected to be disbursed by Raksha Bandhan, a traditional Hindu festival celebrated in August. The announcement marks a significant shift in the city's social welfare policies, replacing the previous Mahila Samman Yojana introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party government. The cabinet approved the new scheme during its meeting earlier this week, and officials confirmed that the online application portal will be made available starting August 1. Eligibility criteria include being at least 18 years old, having resided in Delhi for a minimum of 10 years, and possessing no criminal record. Applicants must submit a self-declaration confirming these conditions. Once verified, the government plans to release the initial payments to the first group of beneficiaries shortly before Raksha Bandhan. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the importance of the initiative, calling it a fulfillment of a promise made within 15 months of her government taking office. She expressed pride in the progress made and assured continued efforts toward improving the welfare of women in Delhi. In a statement shared on X, she described the financial aid as more than just monetary support, highlighting its role in aiding medical expenses for mothers, funding daughters' education, and easing household costs. The new scheme replaces the Mahila Samman Yojana, which had previously offered ₹1,000 per month to eligible women. That amount was later raised to ₹2,100 under the previous administration.
