Delhi inaugurates first women’s police station in North district

Delhi has taken a significant step towards enhancing women's safety by opening its first dedicated women's police station. The new facility, located in the Subzi Mandi area of North Delhi, officially began operations on June 19. This specialized unit is designed to exclusively investigate crimes against women and children throughout the North District, marking a pivotal moment in the city's efforts to address gender-based violence and ensure better support for victims.

The inauguration of the Women Police Station (WPS) was presided over by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who emphasized the importance of creating a secure environment for women and girls. The station operates as a full-fledged police station, with jurisdiction spanning the entire North District. Its establishment aims to streamline the process of reporting and addressing crimes against women, offering a more efficient and empathetic approach compared to traditional methods. The WPS will handle a wide range of offenses, including domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault, stalking, and more severe crimes such as rape and molestation. This comprehensive coverage ensures that all forms of gender-based violence are addressed systematically.

Staffed primarily by female officers, the station is intended to provide a comfortable and trusting environment for complainants and survivors. The design of the facility reflects this commitment to inclusivity and safety, incorporating features that promote accessibility and ease of interaction. Additionally, the station merges with the existing Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell, streamlining resources and expertise to enhance investigative capabilities. This integration allows for a more coordinated response to incidents involving women and children.

The inauguration ceremony saw participation from notable figures, including Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha and senior police officials. Local leaders, women activists, and residents were also present, underscoring the community's support for the initiative. During his speech, Sandhu highlighted the broader societal impact of such measures, noting that a safe environment empowers women to engage actively in education, work, and public life.
