Delhi-Doon expressway: NHAI cracks down on project officials

The recent incident involving the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has sparked significant public concern and political debate. A viral video captured two large potholes on the newly opened six-lane expressway, prompting immediate action from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The video, shared by a motorist, shows the damage caused by the potholes, with several vehicles losing control and suffering damage. The NHAI stated that the affected area was near Kheda Mastan village in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district, where the patrol team identified the issue after heavy rains. The local community allegedly opposed the installation of a balancing culvert, using the culvert opening as a vehicular crossing instead.

The situation escalated as the video gained traction on social media, leading to accusations of corruption against the government. Opposition parties, particularly the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), have pointed fingers at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, suggesting that the poor construction quality indicates mismanagement and financial embezzlement. These allegations have intensified public discourse, with critics questioning the value of the substantial investment made in the project.

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which cost approximately Rs 12,000 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, 2026. Designed to reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from six hours to about two hours, the expressway includes a notable 12 km stretch through Rajaji National Park, serving as Asia's longest elevated wildlife corridor. NHAI officials have taken disciplinary actions against the implicated personnel, including suspending the team leader of the consulting firm and the contractor's project manager. They have also requested explanations regarding potential lapses in service and compliance with project standards.
