The consequences of crossing this threshold could be catastrophic. Researchers estimate that the transformation could release vast amounts of stored carbon, equivalent to several years of global emissions, and significantly reduce rainfall across South America and beyond. However, the severity of the impact remains uncertain. It depends largely on how strong the current El Niño becomes and how much of the forest is burned during the upcoming dry season. Bernardo Flores, a specialist in Amazon resilience based in Manaus, Brazil, expresses deep concern. He warns that if the El Niño proves as strong as predicted, it could lead to massive wildfires spanning regions previously untouched by such devastation. The Amazon is entering this period in a fragile state. Large portions of the rainforest are still recovering from the extreme droughts of 2023–24. Hao Bai, a forest ecologist at Peking University, and his team analyzed 33 years of radar satellite data to assess forest health. They measured two key indicators: moisture content and biomass. Their findings revealed that during the 2023–24 droughts, these metrics dropped to their lowest levels since satellite monitoring began in 1992. The research suggests that less than half of the affected area will return to pre-drought conditions within seven years, a slower recovery rate than ever recorded in the satellite era. These results highlight the growing vulnerability of the Amazon to future droughts driven by both El Niño and climate change. Repeated exposure to extreme conditions before the forest has fully recovered could further weaken its ability to withstand environmental stress. This makes the current situation particularly alarming. Nico Wunderling, an Earth-system modeller at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, and his team conducted a study suggesting that the Amazon may be closer to its tipping point than previously thought. By modeling atmospheric moisture movement and considering the effects of warming and deforestation, they found that even without deforestation, the Amazon could remain relatively stable under global warming up to 3.7–4°C above pre-industrial levels. However, if deforestation removes between 22 and 28% of the forest, the stability could be compromised. These findings add urgency to efforts aimed at protecting the rainforest from further degradation.
