DE-CIX: The World Cup has set a new traffic record

The largest European internet exchange, DE-CIX, set new records for data traffic during the FIFA World Cup final match between Argentina and Egypt on July 7, 2026. At 8:05 PM local time, the Frankfurt-based node reached a peak of 19.636 terabits per second, while the combined traffic across all global DE-CIX nodes hit 29.517 terabits per second. This marks another milestone for DE-CIX, which has consistently been the largest internet exchange in Europe. The growth in data traffic has accelerated significantly over recent years, with nearly an 89% increase in peak traffic at the Frankfurt node since 2021. Similar records were previously set by other major internet exchanges like AMS-IX in Amsterdam and LINX in London, often triggered by large football events. According to DE-CIX CEO Ivo Ivanov, the rise in global data traffic is driven by streaming services, cloud computing, and AI applications.
