Four dead and several missing trying to swim into Ceuta

Ceuta, Spain - Four migrants have died and several others remain missing after attempting to cross into the city by swimming, according to authorities. The incident occurred over the weekend, with more than 200 attempts recorded as migrants tried to enter the Spanish enclave from the Moroccan coast. At least four bodies were recovered from the sea, while a number of individuals are still unaccounted for. The surge in crossings took place primarily during the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, with hundreds of people launching themselves into the Mediterranean from the Moroccan towns of Castillejos and, to a lesser extent, Beliones. Most of those involved were identified as Moroccan and Algerian nationals. The majority of these individuals were intercepted by Moroccan gendarmerie before reaching Ceuta’s shores, though over 100 managed to enter the city illegally. The situation has placed immense pressure on Ceuta’s infrastructure, particularly its temporary immigration center, known as the Centro de Estancia Temporal de Inmigrantes (CETI). With only 512 available beds, the facility reached full capacity, leaving more than 100 migrants waiting outside its gates. This overcrowding has raised concerns among officials about the ability to provide adequate care and processing for all arrivals. Spanish police sources told EFE that the increase in crossings correlates with a recent ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court. The court ruled that undocumented migrants who arrive by sea should not be returned to Morocco, effectively removing one of the deterrents against such dangerous journeys. This decision has been cited by authorities as a key factor behind the spike in attempted crossings. In response to the crisis, the government of Ceuta, led by Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas of the People's Party (PP), issued a statement calling for an urgent reform of Spain’s Foreigners Law. The administration emphasized the need for legislative changes to address the growing challenges posed by irregular migration and to improve conditions for both migrants and local residents. Authorities have also noted that this year alone, 27 migrant bodies have been found along Ceuta’s coastline, marking a sharp rise compared to previous years. The Guardia Civil, Spain’s national police force, confirmed that four additional bodies were discovered over the weekend, bringing the annual total to 27. These fatalities highlight the dangers faced by those attempting the perilous journey across the Strait of Gibraltar. The ongoing influx of migrants continues to strain local resources and raise questions about long-term policy solutions. While some argue for stricter border controls, others advocate for increased humanitarian support and legal pathways for entry. As the situation evolves, officials in Ceuta are under increasing pressure to find a sustainable approach that balances security, legality, and human rights.
