Court orders further probe into alleged assault on YC workers by E.P. Jayarajan aboard flight

In a recent development, a judicial magistrate in Thiruvananthapuram has ordered a fresh investigation into allegations of an assault involving a prominent political figure aboard an IndiGo flight. This decision comes nearly four years after the incident took place during a protest against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The case involves E.P. Jayarajan, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and two Youth Congress activists—Farzeen Majeed and R.K. Naveen Kumar—who claim they were attacked by Jayarajan while protesting on the flight.

The incident reportedly occurred in June 2022 when Majeed and Naveen Kumar staged a protest aboard the flight arriving in Thiruvananthapuram from Kannur. According to their account, they merely raised slogans within the aircraft. However, Jayarajan allegedly retaliated by attacking them. A separate case was registered against Jayarajan based on the complaints from the Youth Congress activists. Additionally, Anil Kumar, who was previously identified as Pinarayi Vijayan's bodyguard, was also named as an accused in this case.

Despite these allegations, the Valiyathura police had earlier submitted a report indicating that there was insufficient evidence to proceed against Jayarajan. This conclusion was reached during the last days of the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's tenure. The report was then presented to the court, prompting Majeed to challenge it. As a result, the court has now instructed the Valiyathura Station House Officer (SHO) to conduct a more thorough investigation. This includes examining CCTV footage and other relevant evidence to compile a comprehensive report.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has expressed its condemnation towards an unrelated but similarly concerning incident involving the alleged assault and attempted sexual attack on a 70-year-old woman in Sundarayya Nagar, Payakapuram. CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao described the incident as a reflection of the growing fear faced by women and senior citizens. He attributed this to the unchecked spread of ganja-related criminal activities, which he claims has deteriorated law and order in the region.

According to CPI(M) leaders, the elderly woman was attacked by a miscreant under the influence of ganja near Sundarayya Nagar embankment during late night. The accused reportedly attempted to sexually assault her, causing fear and concern among the residents, particularly women in the locality. A CPI(M) delegation led by Babu Rao visited the victim and her family to show solidarity and support. Other party leaders, including B. Ramana Rao and C.H. Srinivas, also engaged with local residents who voiced concerns about inadequate security and poor infrastructure in the area.

The CPI(M) leaders described the attack as "inhuman and deeply disturbing." They criticized the government for its failure to curb drug networks effectively and called for the immediate arrest of the accused. Additionally, they demanded the installation of streetlights and CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas, stronger actions against drug suppliers, and improved public safety measures. The party also urged the government to address long-pending housing concerns for poor families residing along Sundarayya Nagar embankment.

Separately, in Greater Noida, an incident involving the assault of a house help has sparked protests among instant app workers. The incident took place in Gaur City 2, specifically at the 11th Avenue apartment complex.
