Countdown begins for Karnataka’s Cabinet expansion

Karnataka Congress restructuring is set to begin tomorrow as state party chief B.K. Hariprasad confirmed preparations for the next phase of cabinet expansion. The process involves consultations between key state leaders and the central Congress leadership in New Delhi, with the aim of finalizing the list of approximately 20 legislators to be inducted into the Cabinet. This follows the commencement of the Monsoon Session of the legislature on August 6, which has prompted the need for swift action to expand the ministry. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, along with former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president Hariprasad, began meetings with the Congress high command in New Delhi on Tuesday. These discussions come amid ongoing efforts to address the state's drought crisis, with the government seeking to appoint district in-charge ministers who can assess the impact of the inadequate monsoon. However, these talks faced delays due to a protest led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, and other Congress MPs near the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi. The demonstration was triggered by a confrontation between youth activists and the police during a previous march to Parliament, and it centered on demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the NEET paper leak incident. Shivakumar joined the protest, further delaying the consultation process. Despite the disruption, the state leadership has reportedly reached a broad agreement on the list of new ministers through consultations with Kharge and AICC general secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala. The proposed expansion aims to balance representation among senior and younger legislators, while addressing regional and caste-based interests across the 20 available positions. Nearly 40 Karnataka legislators are currently camping in New Delhi, actively lobbying for inclusion in the expanded Cabinet. Their presence underscores the competitive nature of the selection process and the importance of securing a seat in the upcoming government. The swearing-in ceremony is anticipated to occur within the next few days, with Lok Bhavan being prepared to host the event. While the exact date remains unspecified, sources indicate that the schedule will be finalized once Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi provides his final approval to the list of ministers. The Governor is expected to receive notification regarding the swearing-in once this step is completed. Additionally, the appointment of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly remains pending, though it is believed that two or three women legislators may be included in the new ministry to promote gender diversity. The initial round of discussions, originally planned in New Delhi last week, did not proceed as AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge had to return to Bengaluru due to a family emergency. This delay highlights the challenges of coordinating such a large-scale political exercise, particularly given the concurrent national protests and internal party dynamics. As the state prepares for the next phase of its governance, the focus remains on ensuring that the new cabinet reflects both the current political landscape and the pressing needs of the state's citizens.
