Most Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) efforts have concentrated on the 'water hole' range (1.42–1.66 GHz), which is believed to be a logical communication band due to its association with hydrogen and hydroxyl molecules. However, a recent study led by Louisa Mason from the University of Manchester used archival data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to explore higher-frequency ranges, such as millimeter and submillimeter bands, which have remained largely unexamined for SETI purposes. While no confirmed technosignatures were detected in this initial survey, the findings suggest that these higher frequencies could represent a promising new avenue in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
