Abu Dhabi has launched a new fleet of 18 smart ambulances aimed at revolutionizing emergency medical care. These advanced vehicles, part of a broader initiative to enhance rapid-response health services, are integrated into a centralized control room operated by the Department of Health. This system allows for real-time coordination between ambulances and hospitals, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate treatment. The smart ambulances are equipped with technology that transmits live data to the control center, including vital signs and other critical patient information. This enables medical teams to monitor conditions en route and prepare for arrivals. Previously, ambulances often arrived at hospitals unprepared for specific emergencies due to lack of prior knowledge about hospital readiness or availability of specialized services. Now, the control room ensures that hospitals are pre-notified and staffed accordingly, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency care. Established in December 2024, the control center brings together representatives from the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi Civil Defence, healthcare groups, and ambulance providers. All parties have access to relevant information, facilitating coordinated responses to emergencies. Large screens display real-time ambulance movements and hospital activities, allowing officials to monitor various aspects of the healthcare system, including transfers between hospitals, blood supply levels, and infectious disease outbreaks. The control center also oversees organ donation processes, hospital activity, and weather alerts. It can detect when essential hospital equipment is unavailable, such as a CAT scanner, and redirect patients to alternative facilities. For instance, if a hospital lacks a functioning CAT scanner, the system can reroute an ambulance to a facility better equipped to handle the patient's needs. This capability underscores the value of real-time visibility in managing complex healthcare scenarios. In addition to these features, the control center monitors different ambulance providers operating across Abu Dhabi, enabling efficient resource allocation during emergencies. This ensures that the right type of ambulance is dispatched based on the patient's condition and the required level of care. The 18 new ambulances are specifically designed for transporting patients requiring intensive care. They offer extra space and specialized equipment for treating seriously ill adults and children, including those suffering from major trauma. These vehicles can also accommodate patients using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life-support technique used for patients with severe cardiac or respiratory failure. Unlike traditional ambulances, these vehicles are large enough to transport patients already connected to ECMO systems from hospitals, allowing for seamless transitions between care settings. Dr. Salama Al Tamimi, executive director of emergency preparedness and response at the Department of Health, emphasized the significance of this advancement. She noted that the system enables the transfer of patients with ECMO machines between hospitals without disconnecting them, thereby maintaining continuous care throughout the process. This innovation represents a substantial leap forward in emergency medical services, offering enhanced capabilities for handling complex and critical cases.
