Congress’s renewed youth outreach: How CJP has forced parties to course correct

Political parties across India are recalibrating their strategies to engage younger voters following the widespread student-led protests that erupted at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and elsewhere. These demonstrations, led by the Coalition of Jawans for Peace (CJP), have prompted both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Congress to reassess their approaches toward the youth demographic. Recently, he visited a police station in New Delhi alongside a victim of a pellet gun injury sustained during the July 20 Sansad Chalo protest. There, he participated in a sit-in demanding that authorities file a formal complaint against those responsible. This action underscores the party’s commitment to addressing the grievances of students who have been affected by the protests and highlights a shift in focus toward tangible solutions rather than mere rhetoric. In response to the growing influence of the CJP, the BJP and its allies have also begun to adjust their strategies. In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has introduced a series of initiatives aimed at engaging the youth, including organizing 1,000 job fairs across the state and leveraging social media to promote cultural and nationalist narratives. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has criticized these efforts, suggesting that BJP leaders should acknowledge the role played by Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, in bringing attention to the issues faced by the Gen Z generation. Raut’s comments reflect a broader debate within the political landscape about how effectively each party is addressing the concerns of the younger electorate. The CWP resolution passed during the Congress meeting expressed deep concern over the challenges faced by the youth, citing statistics such as the increase in paper leak incidents and the tragic loss of life due to exam-related stress. It accused the Modi government of failing to provide adequate support to students and exacerbating the issue of unemployment.
